Growing Through Every Step of the Journey

Advancement is one of the methods of Scouting, encouraging Scouts to learn new skills, build confidence, and develop leadership through hands-on experiences. Each rank represents meaningful achievements in outdoor skills, citizenship, service, leadership, personal fitness, and character. Every Scout progresses at their own pace with the support of troop leaders, mentors, and fellow Scouts

The Scouting America Rank Journey

Scouts advance through the following ranks as they gain knowledge, demonstrate skills, and live the ideals of the Scout Oath and Scout Law:

  • Scout – Learn the fundamentals of Scouting and begin your adventure.
  • Tenderfoot – Develop basic camping, first aid, fitness, and outdoor skills.
  • Second Class – Expand your outdoor knowledge while building confidence and teamwork.
  • First Class – Demonstrate proficiency in essential Scouting skills and become an active leader within the troop.
  • Star – Continue advancing through leadership, service, and merit badge achievement.
  • Life – Take on greater leadership responsibilities while preparing for Scouting’s highest rank.
  • Eagle Scout – The highest rank in Scouts BSA, recognizing exceptional leadership, service, character, and dedication to the ideals of Scouting.

Every rank earned is a milestone worth celebrating and reflects a Scout’s commitment to personal growth.

Merit Badges

Merit badges allow Scouts to explore new interests, discover potential careers, and develop practical life skills.

With more than 130 merit badges available, Scouts can pursue topics such as camping, First Aid, environmental science, cooking, citizenship, communications, personal finance, robotics, photography, aviation, hiking, lifesaving, and many more! Whether discovering a new hobby or preparing for a future profession, merit badges encourage curiosity and lifelong learning.

Boards of Review and Courts of Honor

Advancement is celebrated throughout the year. After completing rank requirements, Scouts participate in a Board of Review, where they reflect on their experiences and accomplishments. When a new rank is earned, the troop recognizes that achievement during a Court of Honor, a special ceremony where families and fellow Scouts celebrate each Scout’s hard work and dedication.
